Yesterday as LMIMS Batch 15 and Batch 16 started their Term 6 and Semester respectively we had Mr. John Samuel, IAS Retd. Former Chief Post Master General, Govt of India, was addressing the students. Being an institution affiliated to Dr.APJ Abdul Kalam University, he fondly remembered his close association and times of close interactions at the President’s Palace, with Dr. APJ. He started with a quote from him, Building a nation of prosperity, justice and beautiful minds rests on three key people: father, mother, teachers. It is a pity that despite being 73 years old nation we have not become prosperous, judicious and beautiful. He suggested that students must dream for a prosperous, just and beautiful India. Quoting from Good to Great he said that being good is not sufficient, we need to dream to be a great nation. He also cited how Qatar was planning and working systematically for a prosperous nation by 2030. He said great corporates had leaders of professional excellence and high levels of integrity and humility. Then he talked about the book Why Nations Fail. There he brought forth the fact that nations fail because leaders fail and institutions fail. He emphasized that for corporates to be great and the nation to prosper we need MBA students to develop and transform themselves into Level 5 leaders during their course.At the personal level to achieve excellent, nobility and greatness he gave a 3P formula, Purpose, Priority and Performance. To explain purpose he narrated the life of Rajkumari Amrit Kaur who left her royal comforts and luxury to join the freedom movement and served as Gandhi’s secretary. She became the first woman to be the cabinet minister of India. She was chosen among the 100 most influential women during the last century across the world during 2019 by Time MagazineTo emphasize on Priority he gave his own life example of how he prioritized Speed Post to make it a grand success. An aircraft was bought to improve speed and efficiency. He gave a new insight of stop doing list. Usually managers do a to-do a list every day.To highlight the importance of Performance he explained how the Government servants at higher levels are evaluated and rewarded.
